Sustained Indirect Narration in Spanish

Sustained indirect narration reports more than one sentence. A clear passage establishes a viewpoint, preserves relative time and reference across it, identifies source changes, and combines ideas without repeating dijo que in every line.

Sustained indirect narration

stable reporting viewpoint + relative-time tenses + explicit source tracking

Maintain one time center until context deliberately changes it, and identify who owns each claim.

Organizing an indirect narrative

Relationship/functionTypical formExample
simultaneous backgroundimperfectExplicó que estaba cansada.
earlier completed actionpast perfectDijo que había trabajado toda la noche.
later action from pastconditionalAñadió que descansaría al día siguiente.
new sourcenamed source + precise reporting verbEl sindicato advirtió que faltaba personal.
reference chainclear noun, pronoun, or cliticLa médica añadió que ya lo habían probado.

Change tense or reference only when time, source, or participant genuinely changes.

Spanish indirect narration: Maintain one coherent reporting viewpoint

Once a past reporting frame is established, keep simultaneous, earlier, and later events consistently related to it unless the narrative deliberately returns to the present.

Explicó que estaba cansada, que había trabajado toda la noche y que descansaría al día siguiente.
She explained that she was tired, had worked all night, and would rest the next day.Imperfect, past perfect, and conditional organize three times around explicó.

Quick check

He said he was ready, had packed, and would leave the next morning.

Track source changes with precise reporting verbs

Use afirmar, admitir, negar, añadir, aclarar, and responder to show each source's stance, and repeat an explicit subject when a source change could be ambiguous.

La empresa afirmó que cumpliría el plazo; el sindicato, en cambio, advirtió que faltaba personal.
The company stated that it would meet the deadline; the union, however, warned that staff were lacking. The subjects and reporting verbs keep attribution separate.

Combine and reformulate without losing reference

Group clauses governed by one source, omit repeated frames only when attribution remains clear, and replace vague pronouns or time words that could point to more than one participant or moment.

La médica explicó que el tratamiento era seguro y añadió que ya lo habían probado, pero advirtió que sus efectos tardarían días.
The doctor explained that the treatment was safe and added that they had already tested it, but warned that its effects would take days.Three reporting verbs form one cohesive, attributable account.

Common mistakes

Explicó que está cansada, había trabajado y descansará al día siguiente. (single past viewpoint intended)

Explicó que estaba cansada, había trabajado y descansaría al día siguiente.

The corrected sequence maintains the chosen past viewpoint.

Afirmó que cumpliría el plazo y advirtió que faltaba personal. (two sources intended)

La empresa afirmó que cumpliría el plazo y el sindicato advirtió que faltaba personal.

Explicit subjects prevent the second claim from being assigned to the wrong source.

Pedro habló con Juan y dijo que su informe estaba mal. (owner unclear)

Pedro le dijo a Juan que el informe de Juan estaba mal.

Naming the owner resolves the ambiguous su.
