Deictic Changes in Spanish Reported Speech
Deictic words point from a speaker's here and now. In reported speech, time, place, demonstratives, pronouns, and movement verbs change only when the new reporting situation changes what those words point to.
Reported reference shift
recalculate person, possession, time, place, and movement from the reporter's viewpoint
Change a deictic expression only when the reporting situation changes its reference.
Common reported-speech reference shifts
| Direct reference | Later/distant report | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| hoy | aquel día | reporting day |
| mañana | al día siguiente | future day from the original speech |
| aquí | allí | speaker location |
| este/esta | ese/esa or aquel/aquella | distance from the reporter |
| mi / tu | su / mi as roles require | owner |
| venir / traer | ir / llevar when direction changes | movement center |
These are contextual mappings, not mandatory word replacements.
Spanish reported speech deictic changes: Recalculate time instead of replacing words mechanically

Choose place words and demonstratives from the new location
Use aquí, ahí, or allí and este, ese, or aquel according to the reporter's location and psychological distance, not merely because the reporting verb is past.
Desde Madrid dijo: «Me gusta esta ciudad». Ya en Lima, contó que le gustaba aquella ciudad.Keep person, possession, and movement coherent
Reassign yo, tú, mi, and tu to the actual participants, and choose venir or ir from the destination relative to the current speaker and listener.
