After dijo, explicó, or pensó, a simultaneous present statement commonly moves to the imperfect.

«Estoy cansado». → Dijo que estaba cansado.
'I am tired.' → He said he was tired.Estaba is simultaneous with the past saying.

Shift future to conditional

A future statement commonly becomes conditional when reported from a past point.

«Volveré mañana». → Dijo que volvería al día siguiente.
'I will return tomorrow.' → He said he would return the next day.Volvería is future from the past viewpoint.

Adjust time and place expressions

Words such as hoy, mañana, ayer, aquí, este, and ahora may shift to ese día, al día siguiente, el día anterior, allí, ese, and entonces.

«Te veo aquí mañana». → Dijo que me vería allí al día siguiente.
'I will see you here tomorrow.' → She said she would see me there the next day.Time, place, person, and tense all shift.

Common mistakes

Dijo que está cansado. (past viewpoint maintained)

Dijo que estaba cansado.

The imperfect aligns the state with the past report.

Dijo que volverá ayer al día siguiente.

Dijo que volvería al día siguiente.

Use conditional for future in the past.

Dijo ayer que me vería aquí mañana. (reporting later elsewhere)

Dijo que me vería allí al día siguiente.
