Spanish Present Perfect Subjunctive: Haya Plus a Participle

The Spanish present perfect subjunctive refers to a completed action while keeping the viewpoint of a present subjunctive trigger. It also presents an action as complete before another event that is still pending.

Spanish present perfect subjunctive: Build haya plus a past participle

Use haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, or hayan followed by one unchanged past participle.

Es posible que hayan llegado.
It is possible that they have arrived.Hayan marks the plural subject; llegado remains unchanged.

Quick check

It is possible that she has left.

React now to an already completed action

After a present expression of emotion, doubt, evaluation, or denial, use the perfect subjunctive when the dependent action is already complete.

Me alegra que hayas venido.
I am glad that you have come. The arrival is complete, while me alegra gives the current reaction.

Complete one action before a pending future event

In a future-oriented time clause, use the present perfect subjunctive when the first action must be finished before the main action occurs.

Cuando hayas terminado, avísame.
When you have finished, let me know.Finishing is pending now but must be complete before the notification.

Common mistakes

Es posible que hayan llegados.

Es posible que hayan llegado.

The participle after haber never agrees with the subject.

Me alegra que has venido.

Me alegra que hayas venido.

The emotional que clause requires the subjunctive, and the completed action requires the perfect form.

Cuando habrás terminado, avísame.

Cuando hayas terminado, avísame.

A pending future time clause uses the subjunctive, not the future indicative.
