Spanish Future Perfect: Forms, Uses, and Examples

The Spanish future perfect looks forward to a deadline and treats an action as already complete by then. It can also look back from the present to make a reasoned guess about what probably happened.

Future perfect formula

future of haber + past participle

Only haber changes for the subject. The past participle stays unchanged.

Future forms of haber

PersonForm
yohabré
habrás
él / ella / ustedhabrá
nosotroshabremos
vosotroshabréis
ellos / ellas / ustedeshabrán

Add one unchanged past participle to express completion before a future point.

Spanish future perfect: Build the tense with the future of haber

Use habré, habrás, habrá, habremos, habréis, or habrán followed by one unchanged past participle.

Para entonces, habremos terminado.
By then, we will have finished.Habremos matches nosotros; terminado does not change.

Quick check

We will have finished.

Mark completion before a future reference point

Use the future perfect when an action will be complete before a future time or another future event.

A las ocho ya habré llegado.
By eight, I will already have arrived. The arrival is viewed as complete before the eight-o'clock reference point.

Use it for probability about the past

Without a future deadline, the future perfect can express a present guess about an action that has probably already happened.

¿Habrá perdido el tren?
Could she have missed the train? The speaker is speculating now about a completed event.

Common mistakes

Habremos terminados.

Habremos terminado.

A participle used with haber never agrees with the subject.

A las ocho ya habría llegado mañana.

A las ocho ya habré llegado.

Use the future perfect, not the conditional perfect, for an expected future completion.

Habrá perdido el tren ayer, seguro.

Habrá perdido el tren, supongo.

This use presents a conjecture, so context should not claim complete certainty.
